About MHCW
Midwest Health Center for Women provides quality
health care and advocates and promotes reproductive
freedom and healthy sexuality. We are dedicated to the
belief that reproductive choices for women are vital
for their health and well-being.
Founded only two years after abortion was legalized
nationwide, Midwest Health Center for Women (MHCW) opened
its doors in 1975 with five courageous employees and
a steadfast commitment to safe, supportive, and affordable
abortion and family planning services. Today, with more
than 30 full and part-time employees and an expanded
mission, MHCW is the only non-profit clinic in Hennepin
County offering the full range of women's reproductive
health care, including surgical and medical abortions.
Annually, Midwest provides abortion services for 3,000
patients, and an additional 1,000 women receive gynecological
and birth control services at our clinic. We also reach
others at risk of unplanned pregnancy or sexually transmitted
infections (STIs) with group education sessions. We
also seek to expand public awareness and gather support
for reproductive rights and health care.
As an abortion provider we are prepared for a long
political battle over reproductive rights. Continued
attacks from the anti-choice minority threaten access
to this legal and safe procedure through legislative
action and regulatory burdens. For example, the so-called
"Women's Right to Know" which became Minnesota
law in 2003 added $80,000 annually to the clinic's
operating budget.
As we look to the future :
- We strive to be a recognized provider of high quality
service, not just for abortions but also for women's
health care.
- We are committed to a diverse paid and volunteer
staff in order to best serve Minnesota's increasingly
global population.
- We engage in the political arena and in the public
debate over abortion to secure women's access to reproductive
health care.
- We commit to gathering the financial resources needed
to provide health care and services for low income
patients.
